Clatsop Community College and the Fort George Brewery are pleased to announce the February event in the first Thursday Ales & Ideas lecture series. On Thursday, February 6th, OHSU Drs. John Heintzman and Miguel Marino will present State of Wonder: How Oregon Has Led the Way in Innovative Healthcare Policy. Doors open with food and beverage service at 6pm. Lecture begins at 7. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. Minors are welcome. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at 14th and Duane St. in Astoria.
Oregon has always been a leader in US public policy. From beach bills, to growth boundaries, to recycling, we live in a state that continues to try new approaches to manage common resources. Sometimes these initiatives have succeeded, sometimes they have failed, and in other cases, the final outcome has yet to be written. The same is true for the story of healthcare and how it’s been organized, delivered, and paid for in Oregon over the past 40 years. The history of Oregon healthcare policy is a story with some triumph, some failure, full of challenging, interesting, and lasting ideas about how we use common resources to take care of each other’s health.
Drs. John Heintzman and Miguel Marino will spend an evening telling the Oregon healthcare story, not focusing on politics, but rather on the history, ideas, and scientific evidence of policy’s impact on human health. They will discuss the birth of the Oregon Health Plan in the late 1980s, describing the challenges that gave rise to this plan, and those that caused it to struggle, plus subsequent initiatives in the last decade to change the way we pay for and organize healthcare. The doctors will highlight the innovative ideas that have spurred these changes, and the challenges to realizing success. Finally, they will share a bit of their own research into some of the most recent Oregon initiatives to improve and streamline healthcare.
Miguel Marino PhD is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics at Oregon Health and Science University in the Departments of Family Medicine and in the School of Public Health. He has spent his career doing research on how we understand the effectiveness, efficiency, and equitability of healthcare policies. Outside of research, Miguel can be found fishing the Oregon rivers, sampling hazy beers, and cooking what Oregon has to offer.
John Heintzman MD is a family doctor, Associate Professor and researcher at OHSU and at OCHIN, Inc (a Portland non-profit that supplies and maintains computerized record systems to clinics who see underserved communities). He studies if and how patients across our state and country access routine primary care, and whether that care is delivered equitably and efficiently. When not working, he can be found fermenting various foods at home, cooking large pieces of meat over fires, exploring Pacific Northwest Oregon trails with his wife and sons, or chasing fish on Oregon rivers.
