Doors open with food and beverage service at 6 pm with the presentation starting at 7 pm. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. Minors are welcome. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at 14th and Duane St. in Astoria.
What’s required to enact meaningful democratic reforms to assure the US includes a democracy governed by “We the People”, not “We the Wealthy” or “We the Corporations”. Patrick Starnes, former Independent Governor candidate of 2018, will be talking about his fight for campaign finance reform (CFR) during the recent election and his efforts after the election taking us up to his current weekly visits to the Capitol in Salem where legislation is being formed during the 2019 legislative session. Starnes will be joined by David Delk of Astoria, current Chair of the Oregon Progressive Party and an advocate with Alliance for Democracy Oregon, who has committed thousands of hours trying to get special interest money out of our elections along with other reforms to make our political system democratic, including Ranked Choice Voting and National Popular Vote. Formal presentations will be followed by audience Q&A and discussion of ways engaged citizens can become more involved with this important movement to support effective democratic processes.
Patrick Starnes, a cabinetmaker for thirty years, grew up in rural Oregon outside of Roseburg where he graduated from Umpqua Community College and then the University of Oregon. After serving over ten years on local school boards Starnes realized that getting big money out of politics was the first priority so we could enjoy other reforms in health care, the environment, and other important arenas. He ran as an Independent Candidate for Governor in 2018. Starnes can be reached at: 541-580-9120 or patrickstarnes@live.com. David Delk, a native Oregonian, now retired and living in Astoria, is Chair of the OR Progressive Party. In 2006 he was a Chief Petitioner on Initiative #46 to amend the OR state constitution to allow limits on campaign contributions. He continues to be active in efforts for election reform in Oregon and beyond.
