Clatsop Community College and the Fort George Brewery are pleased to announce the November event for the 2018-20 first Thursday Ales & Ideas lectures. On Thursday, November 7th, author, lecturer, and emergency planning expert Shaun Martin presents the second in Clatsop Community College’s Family Emergency Preparedness training series: Water Supply and Purification for Emergencies. Doors open with food and beverage service at 6pm. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. Minors are welcome. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at 14th and Duane St. in Astoria.
This month’s presentation will focus on all things water. A reliable drinking water source for your family is critical in any disaster. Shaun will demonstrate several methods of collecting, storing, and converting seemingly unusable water into clean, lifesaving, and drinkable water, with a focus on techniques and sources specific to our community. Although boiling water has its place, what if the water comes out of a duck pond? What about sea water? We’ve all heard of E (Escherichia) Coli, along with Giardia Lamblia and Salmonella, all bacteria commonly found in familiar water sources. Audience members will learn several methods to remove these contaminants and others, ensuring loved ones will always have water during an emergency.
Shaun Martin currently serves as CCC’s Senior Project Manager overseeing the expansion of our MERTS facilities. He has thirty-five years’ experience in the US Army and US Army Corps of Engineers and holds a Master’s in Homeland Security Studies from the US Army Command and General Staff College. He also holds his DAWIA Certification as a Level 3 Facility Engineer. Through CCC’s Family Emergency Preparedness series, Shaun shares direct experience gained through his role in emergency response and natural hazards mitigation planning. As a task force engineer during hurricane Katrina and an emergency manager at Camp Rilea during our own 2007 winter storm, Shaun is an excellent spokesperson to inspire individuals and families to prepare before disaster hits.
