Clatsop Community College was visited by a team of educators representing the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) as part of a regularly-scheduled cycle of evaluation. The comprehensive review spanned a three-day period from October 21 through October 23. The team’s purpose was to determine whether the college continues to fulfill commission standards to remain an accredited college institution.
The full report from the evaluators will not be sent to the college for a few weeks, but the visiting team shared some results before departing. The evaluators concluded the seven-year accreditation review with a college-wide meeting and announced commendations and recommendations for compliance, meaning CCC stepped away from this process with areas that were praised and also areas can be further developed.
CCC President Chris Breitmeyer appreciated the evaluation process that acknowledged the college’s strengths and gave focus for areas of improvement. “It is gratifying to be recognized for our student-centered campus culture. I also appreciate the recommendations to make our college even better. The good news is that for each of these recommendations, work is already underway to address them,” Breitmeyer commented. “Our staff, faculty, and administration work hard to create a student-centric experience and I applaud them all for the work they do.”
Prior to the commission visit, CCC was required to submit an extensively researched self-study addressing NWCCU standards which was reviewed and researched before the in person visit. Then, once on campus, the accrediting commission evaluation team held dozens of meetings with faculty, staff, students and board members.
The on-campus evaluation is a first step in the accreditation process. The preliminary report by the visiting team will be officially sent to the NWCCU next month. Then later this winter, Breitmeyer will meet with NWCCU where the findings will be presented to the commission for them to determine CCC’s accreditation status. The team chair stated that the official decision on accreditation may not be final until around March 2020.
Accreditation allows a college to receive federal funding, including grants and loans given to students and shows that an institution is academically, financially and organizationally viable.
Clatsop Community College was last reviewed for accreditation in 2011. Accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities encompasses the entire institution.
