A virtual fundraiser at Clatsop Community College (CCC) to support the college’s scholarship and student need funds is being held July 6-14, 2020 in lieu of the annual dinner and auction event. This event, “Todays Need, Tomorrow’s Success- A benefit for student needs” is a call-to-action to respond to our students’ ongoing economic struggles and the profound impact of COVID-19 on our students and their families.
Donations of any amount provide help to our students facing job loss, food and housing insecurity, and having to decide whether or not to drop out of school due to financial hardship. Having scholarship dollars available removes those challenges for many students and will also help provide them with the necessary technology to continue their studies.
“Many of our students were living paycheck to paycheck prior to the pandemic and now have lost their jobs and income. This virtual fundraiser is a call to action to help CCC students stay in college to successfully complete their courses and earn their degrees, to forever change their lives and the lives of their families,” CCC President Breitmeyer said.
CCC students participated in a commissioned statewide survey of community college students which brought to light the hardships our community and our students face. The study indicated that 40% of those who filled out the survey have experienced food insecurities in the past 30 days, 54% had been impacted by housing insecurity in the previous year, and 20% had been homeless the previous year. These results were compiled before the pandemic of COVID-19 and the resulting economic recession has only expounded these adversities that our students are facing.
CCC actively works to support the students as much as fiscally possible and has already disbursed emergency funds to provide help to students affected by socio-economic inequities and undue hardships brought on by this global health crisis, and the related economic devastation felt throughout the community. The college funds do not stretch enough to cover all of the need though.
One hundred percent of the donations during the fundraiser will go toward student scholarships and student need funds to cover costs associated with food, housing, medical expenses, transportation and other basic needs.
A virtual fundraiser allows more people to participate from the comfort of their homes without having to think about logistics or worry about being in crowded spaces. The goal for the fundraiser is to exceed the match of $30,000 generously donated by our sponsors.
