Keynote Address
The unmistakable whistle and the plume of steam meant that communities throughout the state were soon going to change. Towns were created, named and grew, shrunk or moved due to the railroad. Streetcars and trolleys served one of Oregon's largest events and changed how people traveled to and from work and places of amusement. In this informative and entertaining keynote presentation, Darrell Jabin, Oregon’s Traveling Historian, shares his research on Oregon railroads and the people who built them. Darrell has been producing videos and doing presentations since 2009. He has done over 200 presentations in more than 40 cities throughout the northwest.

Take charge of how you age so that you get older fabulously without growing old, as presented by Seaside-based mindset coach Jenn Visser.

Explore the ever-changing world of Medicare and how it can affect your future of care and service. This panel-style break out session will take a deep dive into this year’s Medicare changes, with time allotted to answer your specific Medicare questions. Panelists include David Miller, Administrator of Clatsop Care Health & Rehabilitation and Suzanne Bjaranson, Community Programs Supervisor for NorthWest Senior & Disability Services. David has been working in healthcare administration for over 20 years and has keen insight into the world of Medicare as it pertains to long-term and acute care. Breakout Sessions
In this session, we will examine and challenge our cultural and individual beliefs and expectations about aging — discussing “what is normal” in the aging process, learning alternative therapies for common conditions and practicing a few techniques that can make you feel even better, wherever you are.
In this class sampler, Mary, Mike, and Karen will introduce two courses coming up on the ENCORE schedule this year.
Part 1: Everything Equine
Take a journey with local equestrian, Mary Kemhus, to learn about everything horsey. Find out how the horse came to be, why there are so many shapes and sizes and the roles horses have played in world history as well as some local horse history. Discover the purpose of all those leather straps, boots, and saddles. View and touch different types of saddles, bridles and riding apparel. Try on a riding helmet and ride off in your mind into the sunset. What is posting and what are leads? Why do English riders do that funny bumping up and down when they ride? Leave with a cheat sheet on markings and impress your friends the next time you see a horse as you point out a blaze, star, stripe or snip.
Part 2: Science Exchange with Mike Kinney and Karen Elder
Science Exchange, a staple and long-standing favorite class among ENCOREites, is a lively class addressing a variety of interesting topics selected from the full range of science categories. Featuring videos, member-supplied topics and perhaps some brain teasers.
