Clatsop Community College received a $11,395 grant from Northwest Oregon Works to bolster its maritime training program. This funding will be used to equip the college’s training vessel Forerunner with new radar and autopilot systems, enhancing educational opportunities for both degree and non-degree seeking students.
The grant, presented by Len Tumbarello, Maritime Program Coordinator for Northwest Oregon Works, shows the great collaborations in the community that enhance training to prepare students for careers in maritime operations. The Forerunner will be outfitted with a Furuno Touchscreen Radar TZT2BB providing students with hands-on experience in modern maritime navigation technology. Additionally, a Furuno Auto Pilot NAVPILOT 711C will be installed enabling students to master automated vessel control alongside manual navigation techniques.
“I’m honored to present the check to the CCC Maritime Program, enabling the Forerunner navigation equipment to be upgraded and match industry standards,” said Len Tumbarello. “Students will gain practical skills crucial for safe and efficient vessel operation, preparing them for success in the maritime industry.”
“We are grateful to Northwest Oregon Works for their generous support,” said Beth Van Elswyk, CCC Foundation Director who received and manages donation and grant funds. “This investment will not only elevate our training capabilities but also expand opportunities for students to excel in maritime careers.”
The enhancements to the Forerunner are expected to benefit approximately 30 students per term, providing them with industry-standard skills and certifications that are highly sought after in today’s maritime job market.
