Clatsop Community College is proud to collaborate with Tongue Point Job Corps through their Work-Based Learning program, providing students valuable real-world experience and practical skills in facilities and maintenance. This year, CCC is hosting cohorts of Job Corps students and is currently welcoming four students: Keenan, Roux, Petra, and Jake, who are gaining hands-on experience through a six-week placement on the college campus.
The students, who report daily to the CCC Facilities Department, receive a stipend made possible through Oregon Youth Employment Program grant funds by Northwest Oregon Works to perform various tasks and projects, allowing them to apply their Job Corps training directly on-site. James Brock, CCC Facilities staff member and the supervisor for the Job Corps crew, guides students through projects while providing immediate instruction and training.
“There is a running to-do list in the facilities department, but we remain flexible because time-sensitive work orders also come in,” Brock explained. “If students already know how to tackle a task, that’s great. If not, I take time to explain the process, safety procedures, and anything else needed. The goal is to complete projects safely while providing valuable learning opportunities.”
Students appreciate the diverse range of work and the supportive learning environment. Roux, who is studying painting at Job Corps, shared, “I’ve painted two study rooms at the college and learned so many different things through other projects. Using the scissor lift to trim tree branches after winter storms was especially fun to learn.”
Keenan, studying Basic Construction which includes studying electrical work, drywall repair, carpentry, and HVAC maintenance. “It’s great to experience real working conditions,” he noted. “I’ve patched holes, done rewiring, and completed a larger project converting old ballast lights to LED. I’m learning from people who really know their jobs.”

Carpentry students Petra and Jake used their Job Corps training to install new flooring in the college library. Beyond carpentry they also have worked on projects expanding their skill set. “It’s great to learn how to use all the different tools,” stated Petra. “Every day is different, and we are learning new things,” Jake added.

Kim Zufelt, Center Director for Tongue Point Job Corps, praised the collaboration. “These Work Based Learning opportunities at CCC provide invaluable hands-on experience, allowing our students to showcase their skills and professionalism while preparing them for successful future careers. We’re proud of our students and grateful for this strong partnership.”
Dan Clark, CCC’s Director of the Facilities Department, emphasized the mutual benefits of the program. “Collaborating with Job Corps has been fantastic. The extra hands are greatly appreciated in tackling ongoing campus projects in groundskeeping, electrical, plumbing, and building maintenance. We look forward to continuing these opportunities and helping build our future skilled workforce.”
The collaboration reflects CCC and Tongue Point Job Corps’ shared commitment to student success and community growth, with students like Roux enthusiastically giving their experience a “10 out of 10. Would come here again.”
