Clatsop Community College is pleased to announce its annual presentation of The Clothesline Project (TCP). Students and community members are invited to paint a shirt at the Royal Nebeker Art Gallery on Wednesday, February 20 from 6-8 PM. Materials will be provided but all are welcome to bring their own.
The Clothesline is made up of t-shirts created by survivors of violence, or created in honor of someone who has experienced violence. The mission of TCP is to educate students and the community that violence is a problem everywhere, help is available, there is hope and a path to healing. TCP provides evidence that domestic and sexual violence exists in our communities. It is a visual reminder of statistics that we often ignore and gives a voice to those who have been forcibly silenced. A public must be informed about violence in order to act to prevent it. Most importantly, this project provides survivors with a venue to courageously break the silence and make us aware. TCP is a tribute to them. (http://clotheslineproject.info/)
TCP originated in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1990 when a member of Cape Cod’s Women’s Defense Agenda learned that during the same time 58,000 soldiers were killed in the Vietnam War, 51,000 U.S. women were killed by the men who claimed to love them.
Shirts created from the painting night will be on display from February 28 thru March 20th on the 3rd floor of Towler Hall on campus.
