Astoria, OR — The community is invited to attend presentations by high School students from Astoria, Warrenton and Seaside High Schools on their work from the six-week Upward Bound Summer Academy at Clatsop Community College’s Patriot Hall on Wednesday, July 24 at 6:30 PM.
Upward Bound at Clatsop Community College is a TRiO pre-college program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program provides advising, tutoring, mentoring, cultural enrichment and academic instruction for students in 9th through 12th grades. The Summer Academy is a college-simulation experience to promote success in education beyond high school. Students attend academic classes in the morning and hands-on group projects in the afternoon.
Students will be presenting information on their afternoon project groups. This year, students were able to choose one of four project groups:
eHistory – Mr. Vollner
Students created a digital scavenger hunt/walking tour around the greater Astoria area by creating individual websites that document our own living history.
Ecology in Action – Mr. Henri
Students were able to enjoy the outdoors while giving back to our social and ecological community through hands-on projects at Shively Park, Gray School Community Garden, and the Cathedral Tree Trail
Improv Bound – Ms. Honl Wilson
Students practiced the art of performing improv, built self-confidence, learned how to say “Yes”, and worked as a unified team to create a live performance.
Alt-E Energy & Solar – Mr. Shumaker
Students learned about alternative energy systems and designed a solar energy system to build at Warrenton High School.
Students will be presenting their experience at Upward Bound Summer Academy in a fair like setting with attendees able to move between each group. The admission is free. On July 24th, doors open at 6:00 PM and student presentations start at 6:30 PM, with a live performance by the Improv group at 7:00 PM.
