The Wauna Mill presented Clatsop Community College a check for $5,000 in support of the college’s Automotive Program and Safety Training on Thursday, December 6. One may question why the Wauna Mill would be interested in helping to advance the automotive program when they produce nationally branded consumer products. The connection is technology.
CCC’s Automotive Program stays current on technology, which means it focuses on understanding diagnostic and software technology as much as mechanically putting a vehicle together. Thad Nolan, instructor for the Automotive Program at CCC, says that students learn to use diagnostic tools in class and learn to look at data, interpret it, and then troubleshoot what glitches may be occurring.
Wauna Mill Manager, Jeremy Ness, notes that these are some of the same skills that operators at the mill need to troubleshoot automated equipment. “The Wauna Mill has a lot of new technology and we continue to update our manufacturing capabilities,” Ness adds, “There is a lot happening in manufacturing with advancements in the digital age, and we are eager to have new employees with a technical aptitude who can troubleshoot automated equipment.”
The Wauna Mill has positions available that start at more than $18 an hour, with advancement opportunities. Wauna Mill Public Affairs Manager, Kristi Ward, wants CCC students to think of the Wauna Mill as a great place to get a job after graduation. “We want to show the students that the Wauna Mill can offer successful careers in the community but also set people up for advancement as GP has more than 200 locations across the United States. We want the Wauna Mill to be the place people want to work as they graduate out of the automotive program.”
Nolan sees this as a great opportunity for the students that graduate from his program. “I’m just learning about the need for diagnostic skills that students get in the auto program that can apply to the Wauna Mill’s diagnostic automated jobs. The attitude of most students in the tech programs at CCC is that they want to be there, get the knowledge and get employed, and this is a great opportunity for the graduates.”
Nolan already has some thoughts on uses for the donation from the Wauna Mill. “This will help us to update our scan and diagnostic equipment to stay current, which in turn can benefit the Wauna Mill with future employees and the skills they need.”
